Sberbank

Sberbank is Russia’s largest bank, with tens of millions using its mobile app. I worked on the personal banking app, focusing on credit products for iOS and Android. My role included UX research, prototyping, and contributing to the Design System in close collaboration with the platform team.

At the time, Sberbank Online was the largest Russian bank (with 70 million monthly active users of its mobile app), providing customers with features such as balance viewing, transaction review, credit applications, credit card services, and bill payments for mobile, internet, public services, and more. Additionally, clients could access insurance and investment services.

During my time at Sberbank, I worked on the individual banking mobile application, primarily focusing on credit products, designing for both iOS and Android platforms, creating prototypes, and participating in UX research. I also contributed to the Design System and collaborated closely with the platform team.

Credit potential

Credit Potential was an innovative product that empowered users to calculate the precise amount of credit that a bank could offer them. This calculation was based on various factors, including the user's income, marital status, possessions (such as real estate and cars), and more.

The main challenge was addressing the psychological aspect: while people desired to obtain credit, they often hesitated to provide comprehensive personal information. Thus, my objective was to design a calculation process that was both user-friendly and instilled trust. By simplifying the process and ensuring transparency, I aimed to alleviate user concerns and foster confidence in the results.

In addition to that, I should have demonstrated the relationship between different parameters that the user selects, such as the total amount of credit or the loan period, the eventual percentage, and most importantly, the monthly payment for the loan. That is why the calculator with scale was one of the most crucial components of the flow.

All screens were created using the existing Design System, with some modifications and additions made to certain elements when appropriate. Furthermore, I ensured that all screens were designed to be compatible with both iOS and Android platforms, taking into account their differing visual requirements. At that time, there was a notable disparity between the two platforms, which is why it was important for the designer to unify them as much as possible in order to save time for the development team.

After its release, this feature led to an 11% increase in the amount of issued credits within the following month. Subsequently, the value continued to consistently grow.

Other credit products

I also worked on other products, such as car and consumer credits. While these business processes were already well-established in the market, only a few banks were able to offer remote credit issuance and complete document signing. My task was to simplify this procedure to enhance the sales funnel and make it accessible to a wider range of customers.

We also offered customers the opportunity to obtain credit not only for new cars, but also for used ones. This posed a greater challenge in terms of online estimation and accurately indicating all the relevant circumstances for the user. That’s why the calculator was also an important part of the user flow here as well.

By the time I left the team, the car credits had been successfully launched and deployed to production. Additionally, the portfolio of consumer credits in 2018 demonstrated a remarkable year-on-year growth of 25.3%, surpassing 6.2 trillion ₽. These achievements were a testament to the team's efforts and the positive impact of our work in driving substantial growth in the consumer credit sector.

Design team activities

In addition, I had the privilege of leading demo sessions and speaking at internal designers' conferences, where I shared insights, experiences, and best practices. This included creating engaging presentations and facilitating master classes to inspire and educate fellow designers. Furthermore, I actively contributed to the development of the Design System, playing a role in shaping its components and ensuring its continued growth and alignment with the app's strategy.

Overall, collaborating in a large design team (approximately 100 people for all the mobile and web services at that time) provided me with valuable experience in aligning and reaching agreements to ensure a smooth and consistent user experience within the same brand.
